The lifeline - Moderates Checking their Premises
The narcissistic amorality of Trump will soon be gone.
With the next elections approaching, moderates on both the left and the right are becoming increasingly concerned about the extremists within their own camps. Moderates on the left worry about figures such as Zohran Mamdani and others like him, as the more radical wing of the left continues to gain traction.
Moderates on the right worry about figures such as Tucker Carlson, J.D. Vance, and others pushing the movement further to the right. The more radical wing of the right is also gaining traction.
Unlike Trump, these groups are more ideologically consistent. They have a clearer sense of what they want. Their political fundamentals are more coherent than those of Trump or Obama.
The extremists on both the right and the left go exactly where their irrational fundamentals lead them.
Anyone who cares about fundamentals knows where they are headed.
The Founding Fathers held rational—and therefore sane—fundamentals that differ from those of both sides.
Moderation will not persuade those who are fundamentally confused to stop following either side, nor will it offer them a better direction.
Moderation will only give bad fundamentals the benefit of the doubt.
But this raises a more fundamental question: What ideas are worth being radical for?
That is the question I can only hope moderates ask themselves.
